GlorySound is a high-energy Christian rock/worship band from Riverview, FL. They play both original tunes as well as heart-moving worship, and share personal testimonies frequently during their sets. Signed to the TMG label in December 2010, they will be working on their debut album over the subsequent 3 months, so be on the lookout for that...it should be fantastic.
I had a couple of nifty ideas I wanted to try out for their photo shoot, one of which involved going to a particular area near my studio that I had recently discovered. It was basically a spot that some pretty careless people had decided to turn into a makeshift trash dump. I had this idea of a really grungy scene where the band would be sitting around on broken furniture that was arranged into a normal living room configuration....as if they were homeless people pretending that they were hanging out in someone's den watching TV. Anyway, the band really dug the concept, and as soon as we got to the shoot location, they started picking through the rubble while I set up my lighting rig. This is what we ended up with:
The other main idea I had for GlorySound's promo shoot was to composite all 5 of them into a nice sunset scene. Since I had a pretty solid plan for what the final image would eventually look like, I shot each of them in my studio with a special lighting setup. Basically there was a strobe (with a beauty dish) up front, and a strobe with an amber-colored gel placed behind each band member. The amber glow created by the strobe in back was what really helped pull the composite together, because people naturally have what's called a "rim light" when they're being illuminated from behind (as in the case of a sunset). So this critical piece of the puzzle is what really makes the composite believable. Remember, this shot is composed of 6 separate photos!
